Liverpool remain in top spot after Manchester United miss chance and Man City still can't get close

Liverpool still lead the way when it comes to major trophies despite not claiming any silverware this season

Liverpool supporters could only watch on in discomfort yesterday evening as Manchester City completed the treble.

A narrow victory over Inter Milan ended the Sky Blues' wait for Champions League glory, with Pep Guardiola able to deliver this prestigious trophy at the seventh time of asking since taking charge of the club in 2016.

Following in the footsteps of the 1999 Manchester United side, who won the Premier League, FA Cup and European Cup, City have become only the second English team to achieve this feat after their success in Istanbul on Saturday evening.

After claiming two pieces of silverware last term, Jurgen Klopp's side fell short in all competitions this campaign but will have hopes of bouncing back to compete for the biggest prizes next year. The signing of Alexis Mac Allister is a step in the right direction to making this possible, though further additions are required to help the Reds fight on all fronts again.

City may well be adding to the collection of trophies they have lifted under Pep Guardiola's reign, though the Sky Blues have half the number of major honours of Liverpool in their history as a club. United are the closest team to catching the Reds in this department and missed an opportunity to add to their tally after losing in last weekend's FA Cup final at Wembley to their bitter rivals.

Below is a breakdown of major honours won by Liverpool and their main rivals. The Community Shield is not included in this list. Major trophies include: Division One/ Premier League titles, FA Cup, League Cup, European Cup/ Champions League, UEFA Cup/ Europa Cup, Cup Winners' Cup, Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Intercontinental Cup.

Liverpool 50 - Division One/Premier League (19) FA Cup (8), League Cup (9), European Cup/Champions League (6), UEFA Cup/Europa League (3), UEFA Super Cups (4), FIFA Club World Cup (1).
