Garnacho thinks Manchester United team-mate ‘probably the best in the world’

Alejandro Garnacho believes Manchester United team-mate Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the ‘best one-v-one defender in the world’ after a superb second half of the season under Erik ten Hag.

Was this the most unexpected comeback since Michael Keaton claimed a Golden Globe for 2014’s Birdman?

Aaron Wan-Bissaka looked destined for the Old Trafford scrapheap after barely kicking a ball in anger during the first four months of the Ten Hag era at Manchester United.

Suggestions that the former Crystal Palace defender has now seen his name removed from the transfer list is, then, testament to a fightback few saw coming. Wan-Bissaka went from forgotten man to first-name-on-the-team-sheet in the blinking of an eye.

And Garnacho is well placed to pass judgement; the enthralling left-winger coming up against United’s tough-tackling right-back during countless occasions on the training pitch.

“Aaron Wan-Bissaka probably is the best one-v-one defender in the world,” Garnacho says in quotes reported by The Express.

“He goes to the floor always to tackle you. He’s fast and difficult (to beat).”

Wan-Bissaka’s penchant for perfectly-timed interceptions and crunching slide tackles is nothing new. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher repeated Garnacho’s praise almost word-for-word back all the way back in 2020; the former England U21 international shutting down Raheem Sterling during United’s hard-fought 2-0 Manchester derby victory on home soil.

Since Ten Hag replaced Ralf Rangnick at the helm, however, Wan-Bissaka has added a brand new string to his bow. So often criticised for his lack of quality in the final third, the 25-year-old has come on leaps and bounds with the ball at his feet, one mesmerising run against Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals epitomising his unexpected evolution into one of Manchester United’s most impressive all-rounders.

The ‘Croydon Cafu’, anyone?

“He has improved a lot,” Ten Hag said last month. “As many players have improved during the season.

“That’s one of the jobs for a manager and the coaching staff, to get that done and we are really happy with it. Players are developing.

“If they can set their egos aside, then you will see that the team develops and progresses. And then within the team’s progress, individuals make a lot of progress. And Aaron is definitely one of them.”
