The Boy Next Door
Jenny didn't understand why Tom suddenly stopped talking to her.
They used to be best friends. Every day, Tom would:
- Wait for her after class
- Buy her favorite strawberry milk
- Help her with math homework
- Laugh at all her jokes
But now? Nothing.
When she said hi, Tom just nodded and walked away fast. At lunch, he sat far from her. He stopped texting her funny cat videos.
Jenny felt sad and confused. Did she do something wrong?
One day, she heard Tom's friend Mark talking to another classmate.
"Tom is totally in love with Jenny," Mark whispered. "He's scared she only thinks of him as a friend. So he's staying away to protect his heart."
Jenny's eyes got big. Tom... loved her?
She thought about all the times Tom was there for her. How he always made her smile. How safe she felt with him. And she realized - she loved him too!
The next day, Jenny waited by Tom's locker with two strawberry milks.
When Tom saw her, he tried to turn around.
"Tom, wait!" Jenny called out. "I miss you."
Tom stopped, his face red. "I... miss you too."
Jenny took a deep breath. "I heard what you told Mark. About why you've been avoiding me."
Tom looked like he wanted to run away.
"The thing is..." Jenny continued, her heart beating fast, "I love you too."
Tom's eyes got wide. "Really?"
Jenny nodded, smiling. She handed him one of the strawberry milks.
Tom grinned - that big, bright smile Jenny had missed so much. He took her hand, and they walked to class together.
Sometimes the best love stories start with friendship. And sometimes, the person you're trying to protect yourself from is the one who wants to be closest to you.
